What is ORCID?

Why is ORCID useful?

ORCID (acronym for Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a unique code that identifies researchers at an international level. Unlike other identification codes, ORCID is not linked to commercial entities (Web of Science / Scopus) or disciplinary initiatives (PubMed, RePEc, arXiv). Instead, it is a globally widespread and interdisciplinary identifier, which can be used both by researchers in bibliometric fields and those in the humanities. ORCID is managed by an international, interdisciplinary, and non-profit organization, whose purpose is to create and maintain a registry of unique identifiers and to link these identifiers to the publications and research activities of each researcher.

Author disambiguation and the correct attribution of research works are two fundamental points for anyone wishing to carry out analyses at various levels on the scientific output of individual authors, research groups, departments, research institutions, universities, national systems, or disciplinary areas. In daily practice, anyone working in research and evaluation realizes that the databases used as references (Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar), regardless of their reliability, access methods, and sources used, present fundamental problems related to recognizing the correct affiliation of a researcher, the correct form of the name (homonyms, allonyms, variant forms), or in the case of names written in different alphabets and characters. The adoption and use of the ORCID identifier will help to overcome these problems.
